Cosmetic procedures have become very popular these days, with almost 18 million surgical procedures taking place in the United States annually. Among the common cosmetic procedures that people undergo are eyelid surgery, botox and tummy tuck. Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery can be done for cosmetic reasons or to improve vision in patients where the eyelids obstruct vision. Too much skin or sagging skin can lead to impaired vision and contributes to the appearance of aging. The lower eyelids with chronic puffiness or wrinkling are often reduced eyelid reshaping surgery for a more youthful appearance. Fat pads under the eyes causing the appearance of “bags” are also removed as necessary.

Botox cosmetic is an injectable wrinkle muscle relaxer which uses botulinum toxin type A, specifically Onabotulinumtoxin A, to temporarily paralyze muscle. The aim of this treatment is to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. A Botox treatment is minimally invasive and is considered a safe, effective treatment for fine lines as well as wrinkles around the eyes. It can also be used on the forehead between the eyes. In 1989, Botox was originally FDA approved for the treatment of blepharospasm and other eye muscle problems.

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck removes excess skin from the abdominal area and tightens the skin that remains. This surgery is often done by people who have excess skin after being pregnant or after losing significant weight after bariatric surgery. The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck does not have excess fat deposits in the abdomen to remove but too much skin hanging from the abdomen. A lot of patients are able to resume normal activities in 2 to 3 weeks, but they may have limits on physical activity for a longer period of time.
